The 7 Madmen
A secret organization of “Seven Madmen” comes together under the guidance of an “Astrologer”: a grotesque conspiracy of world domination, rife with extreme ideological views and delusions. Written in 1929, shortly before the Wall Street Crash and the Argentine coup d'état, Arlt’s novel introduces us to a world of violence and terrorism, dominated by dystopian machines, the fantasy of easy money, and a proclivity for illegal activities and crime.
Tubes scattered in space, represent the industrialization of the era, the enforcement of the city over nature. The small cottage / greenhouse standing out of city’s atmosphere, implies Astrologer’s refuge and headquarters of the secret organisation. Trees and greenery have been replaced by sheet metal and nature exists only within the artificial element and depends on human action.
Costumes draw on the power of accessories inspired by Argentine tango and 70s American fashion; Argentine and cowboy hats, leather shoes and boots, yellowish glasses to aid limited vision within the cloud, sharp form in pants. The above, combined with the help of make-up as if they were immersed in a thick cloud, manage to give a common direction to the disparate heroes. Otherwise, the main aim is to render the paradoxical coexistence of the heroes through their contrasts and the sense of absurdity that the play brings.
