Samsara
Falling sand and figures which appear one by one between the sand dunes, multiplying the moving figures of the dancers draw the line of the scenography landscape. Samsara, inspired by the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West”, traces the steps we take, both forward and backward, in search of our higher selves. Drawing on thinking and imagery at the heart of Buddhist philosophy, it explores some of the 81 obstacles and 6 states of mind that can hold us back. The title comes from the Sanskrit word meaning wandering or world, and the work was inspired by ancient monks' pilgrimage stories: literal and figurative, realistic and spiritual journeys.Epic mythological narrative merges with personal experience and humor from two diametrically opposed perspectives, in a timeless and symbolic landscape.
